5 Super Easy DIY Projects for Upcycling Old Clothes

Does upcycling old clothes sound appealing? Try out these DIY projects:

That time of the year for decluttering your closet has come. You’re ready to embrace a new season by throwing out or donating everything you don’t use or wear anymore. But before rushing into that, consider upcycling old clothes. It won’t take long because I know this is a huge drawback for many of us, so I’ve tested and selected only the easy ones.

It’s an excellent economic method to bring fresh life into old stuff, plus you won’t be adding to the growing amount of textile waste. Saving money and the environment seems like a winning combination, doesn’t it?

This is a light reading; it will only take a few minutes, so let’s start. Oh, and don’t forget to grab a pen to write down everything for later. It’s going to be so much fun!

Rip T-shirts and turn them into cleaning cloth

Although old t-shirts may have an unpleasant appearance, their age generally makes them exceptionally soft, which makes them ideal for washing sensitive surfaces. For this use, cotton shirts work well. Just cut them in two and use them to wash glass tables, wooden surfaces, and leather.

Turn T-shirts into bags

Another easy-to-do project for upcycling old clothes is turning old and bad-looking t-shirts into bags. Sounds fun, right? Let’s see how you can do it. Bring your best scissors and get to work. Cut the sleeves and neck opening larger to create a tank top (the handles will serve as the “straps”). Following that, sew up the bottom of the shirt. Do you hate sewing, or do you simply don’t know how to do it? No problem at all. You may clip the bottom to create little tassels, then just knot them.

Old socks? Turn them into heating pads

If this upcycling game seems fun, think about what you can do with a pair (or more) of old socks instead of throwing them out. I’ll tell you: turn them into nice heating pads. Are you experiencing joint and muscular pain? Upcycle your socks by creating a homemade heating pad out of them. Simply fill them with raw rice add a few drops of an essential oil of your choice, and then seal the open end with a knot or sewing.

Before using put them in the microwave for a minute straight, and then place the handmade heating pad wherever it hurts your body. Just be careful and never put it on the skin directly. Use a towel or a piece of clothing.

Ripped jeans? Just cut them into shorts and (or) hair accessories

This is my favorite way of upcycling old clothes, especially before summertime. I can’t remember when was the last time I bought myself a pair of short jeans! Cut your denim into shorts, then use the remaining material to create easy headbands or ties for your hair. Fortunately, symmetry is not necessary because the damaged look is currently in style, so instead of trying to make it look perfect, embrace jagged edges.

You’re thinking about starting all these upcycling projects, but your sewing kit is a bit outdated. Luckily, I went through Amazon and found this cool sewing kit with a portable case that contains everything from scissors to needles. All for only $6.39! I’d say it’s a catch, so don’t miss out on the offer.

In need of scarves? Use loose sweaters

Knit sweaters that have stretched out may be transformed into warm scarves; all you need to do is take off the bottom half of the sweater and clip it a little. Voila! You’ll turn some heads for sure. And expect people to ask you from which fancy store you bought it.

Which one of these upcycling projects are you eager to try? Tell me in the comments.
