Your Garage Storage Questions Answered
Here are answers to a few more common questions about what is and isn’t safe to store in your garage.
Is it safe to store a generator in the garage?
Yes, you can store a portable generator in the garage, but you must NEVER, EVER run it inside the garage, or in any enclosed or partially enclosed space. Generators produce deadly, odorless carbon monoxide (CO) gas. Always move the generator outside and far away from windows, doors, and vents before starting it. When storing it, ensure the fuel tank is empty or that you’ve added a fuel stabilizer if it will be stored for a long period.
What about storing firewood in the garage?
This is not a good idea. Firewood that has been sitting outside is often a hiding place for insects like spiders, termites, and carpenter ants, as well as rodent pests. Bringing firewood into your garage provides a direct bridge for these pests to enter your home. The best practice is to store firewood on a rack at least 18 inches off the ground and several feet away from your house’s foundation.
Can I store canned food in the garage for a short time?
While it may seem harmless, it’s best to avoid it. A single unexpectedly hot day can raise the temperature in your garage enough to begin affecting food quality and safety. The best habit to build is to move all groceries, including canned goods, directly into your home’s climate-controlled pantry or kitchen right after you buy them.
