1. Make a list

Before we start talking about storage ideas, we have to start with something that doesn’t sound appealing but is necessary. Unleash your inner Marie Kondo and start by taking inventory of everything you own. Divide your items into different categories: things you need, donate, or throw out. This rule applies to everything, from clothing to shoes, accessories, furniture, and home decor to art objects, kitchen utensils, and appliances.

If something doesn’t bring you joy, it’s time to say goodbye! To keep your space neat and organized, you should repeat the process at the end of every year. You have 365 days to think about whether an item serves a purpose or not. A deep clean can work wonders! Your home will feel bigger and brighter, and you’ll benefit from a clear, refreshed mind.

2. Invest in multifunctional furniture

When it comes to tiny home design, versatility is key! Imagine a couch that easily converts into a bed or a dining table that doubles as a coffee table. Choose furniture that combines storage with functionality. For instance, you could have a dining bench with a lift-up lid for extra storage and add casters for easy mobility.

I remember that when I moved into my first apartment, I had a bed and a couch with storage space underneath, where I put all of my off-season shoes and clothes, extra bed linens, new pots and pans I received from my family, and everything I didn’t need for the next couple of months.

You can take things even further by using vacuum bags to store heavy items. For example, store heavy jackets and scarves in vacuum-sealed bags. Vacuum them to remove excess air and keep them compact until needed. This trick saves a ton of space! It’s all about maximizing every inch of your tiny home while keeping things practical and flexible.

3. Keep your belongings hidden

One of the best tricks to make your home feel bigger and more organized is to keep your belongings out of sight. I also live in a small space, so I make the most of it by designating a spot for everything and avoiding open shelves and cabinets, which can quickly gather dust and make a room feel cluttered.

Instead, I limit myself to just three items on shelves and store the rest in cupboards with doors and drawers. Just be careful not to let those hidden spaces become a jumble! Keep only the items you use regularly, and remember, everything should have a designated spot. The less you leave out, the more organized your space will look. Out of sight, out of mind!

4. Elevate your space

When you think of ideas to increase the storage space in your tiny house, don’t forget about easy ways to elevate your space. While walk-in closets and cabinetry look incredible, it’s not a feasible option when you have limited square footage.

However, you can elevate your floors to install storage space just below your feet. For instance, you can build hidden drawers, which will also add a touch of mystery to your space. If you live in a house on two levels, you can install drawers under the staircase. It might not be the most affordable option, but it will be useful and stylish!

5. Have some bedroom storage

Just because you have a tiny house doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of it! There are plenty of storage alternatives in bedrooms to help you organize your area and increase your storage space. If you’re looking for a new bed, think about getting one with integrated storage or a loft. Moreover, you might put up vertical storage or cabinets on the wall behind your bed frame to store books, scented candles, paintings, and other special items that give your room personality and warmth.

The majority of the items you wish to fit in your tiny house can probably be stored most conveniently under the bed. Furthermore, most of the time, people never even consider using that for storage. In addition to building a wall of storage above and around the bed, I couldn’t recommend nightstands enough. When I had my first apartment, I had two nightstands with two drawers each. They served as great storage space for my underwear, workout clothes, socks, and pajamas.

6. Add corner shelves

Besides increasing your storage space, your tiny house will look amazing with corner shelves. You can install them in every room, including your bathroom. They’re a staple for people who don’t have much square footage. These lovely shelves are useful, easy to install, and won’t get in your way. Take a walk around your home and identify the areas that could be improved with some adorable corner shelves. I love how books, bathroom products, or makeup look on them.

7. Roll your towels

If you’re looking for a less than 5-minute method to increase the storage space in your tiny house, go to your bathroom and start rolling your towels. When there’s not enough space to stack your towels, you can just roll them and place them in a hallway linen closet or small bins in your bathroom.

8. Add an ottoman or a pouf

As you already know, tiny houses have living rooms that are usually very small, so there’s not always enough for additional seats. You can get rid of this issue by investing in an ottoman or pouf with storage space. This gives you that much-needed space while also providing extra sets for your guests.

9. Add a skinny shelf

If you like to add flavors to your meals and snacks, you probably have a ton of spices in your kitchen. The more you have, the less available space you end up with. But no more with that! We can get rid of this problem by installing a skinny shelf above your sink or cooking area. Put all your spices and herbs in small jars, label them for easier access, and put them on the shelf. This adorable solution is just perfect for your tiny house.

10. Add drawers underneath your couch

Last, but certainly not least, you can maximize the storage space available in your tiny house by building a custom couch for your living room. You can ask for a stunning piece of furniture with drawers built underneath, so you can store shoes, bedding, clothing, and everything in between. Some couches already have built-in storage space, so check out furniture stores in your neighborhood or look for them online. It will make a huge difference!
